The median Shopify store converts 1.4% of sessions; the top 20% convert above 2.7% (Littledata, 2026).

Measures: sessions that end in an order

Benchmark: Shopify median 1.4%

Guides: 5

She tries on a dress in a boutique, pauses and almost puts it back on the rail. Her friend says, “That is so you. Try it with these heels.” Two minutes later she has a complete look and leaves with two pieces at full price. That night she finds a similar dress online with 20% off, opens the size chart, closes it and leaves. The price was lower. The answer was missing.

Conversion rate is the share of visits that end in an order. In a fashion store it is decided mostly on the product page, where a shopper has to settle her doubts about fit, fabric and style with nobody to ask. It is the third of six stages in a Shopify fashion store, after Engagement, where shoppers explore, and before AOV, where orders grow.

This hub covers what to measure, what a good number looks like, why shoppers leave a product page without buying, and the five guides that answer their doubts, most of them with Shopify’s own tools.

Part of Grow Your Shopify Fashion Store with Styling: Salesperson to Stylist, our guide to the six stages of a Shopify fashion store.

In this guide

What is conversion rate for a Shopify fashion store?

What is a good conversion rate for a fashion store?

Why do shoppers leave a product page without buying?

Which fixes raise conversion rate?

Can photos and product details answer every doubt?

Should I offer a discount to raise conversion?

What does a personal AI stylist add on the product page?

How do I measure conversion rate in Shopify?

Where does conversion rate fit in the six stages?

What else do founders ask about conversion rate?

A salesperson

shows the product and waits for the click.

A stylist

answers “will this suit me?” before she has to ask.

What is conversion rate for a Shopify fashion store?

Conversion rate is the share of online store visits that end in a completed order: sessions that completed checkout divided by all sessions.

One number tells you whether shoppers buy. Three steps underneath it tell you where they stop, and that decides which fix to try first.

Number

What it tells you

Where to find it

Conversion rate

The share of sessions that completed checkout

Shopify Analytics

Added to cart rate

The share of sessions in which a shopper added at least one item to the cart

Shopify Analytics

Reached checkout rate

The share of sessions that reached the checkout page

Shopify Analytics

Product page to add-to-cart rate

How many product page views turn into an add to cart, page by page

A funnel exploration in Google Analytics 4

The first three follow Shopify’s own metric definitions.

A low added to cart rate points to the product page: shoppers look and don’t commit. A good added to cart rate with few completed orders points to the cart and checkout: costs, delivery or returns.

What is a good conversion rate for a fashion store?

Half of Shopify stores convert less than 1.4% of sessions, so a good target is the next band above your own number, not one industry average.

1.4%

is the median conversion rate of 433 Shopify stores over 90 days. A product page that answers every doubt on a laptop can hide the same answers three swipes down on a phone.

Shopify changed how it counts sessions

Shopify rolled out a new session measurement from September 21 to 23, 2026. Because conversion rate is orders divided by sessions, rates before and after are not directly comparable. Start your baseline after September 23, 2026.

Why do shoppers leave a product page without buying?

Shoppers leave a product page without buying when it tells them what the piece is but not whether it is right for them, so the doubt stays and the order doesn’t happen.

Clothes are bought for who she wants to be, so the cost of a wrong choice feels high: she imagines the regret of a dress that looks wrong at the wedding. A shopper buys once she can picture herself wearing the piece. Every doubt the page leaves open stops that picture.

She can’t see it on a body like hers

A flat-lay photo shows the fabric, not the fit. Baymard Institute’s 2026 product page benchmark found that 23% of sites don’t show products designed to be worn on a human model at all. Even with a model, one body in one size leaves most shoppers guessing how the piece falls on them.

She can’t judge fabric, fit or what to wear it with

In a shop she feels the fabric, tries a second size and holds the dress against the shoes she likes. Online, “95% viscose, 5% elastane” doesn’t say whether it clings, creases or itches, and a single product photo doesn’t say what goes with it. Size questions belong partly to the Return stage, where the size and fit guides live.

Nothing answers “will this suit me?”

Photos, fabric notes and styling tips answer the same questions for everyone. The last question changes for every shopper: will this colour work with my skin, is this right for my occasion, will it go with what I own. In a boutique a stylist answers it in one sentence. On most product pages nobody does.

Some reasons are not about styling

Fix these before you blame the product page. In Baymard Institute’s survey of US shoppers, the most common reasons for leaving during checkout were extra costs such as shipping, tax and fees (40%), slow delivery (20%) and an unsatisfactory returns policy (13%). Baymard’s product page benchmark also found that 44% of sites don’t show or link the returns policy from the main product content, while 60% of users in a separate study said they look for it there.

Which pattern shows up in your analytics?

Each pattern points to a different first fix.

What you see

What it means

Start with

Product pages get views, but few add to cart

She can’t judge how the piece looks worn

On-model photos or different body types

Shoppers tap the size chart or open reviews, then leave

She is unsure the piece will suit her body

Different body types or answering “will this suit me?”

Shoppers zoom into fabric photos, or email to ask what it feels like

She can’t judge the fabric

Fabric and feel

Shoppers open several similar pieces and buy none

She can’t picture what to wear it with

Styling tips

Good add-to-cart rate, few completed orders

Costs, delivery or returns surprise her in the cart

Show shipping costs and the returns policy on the product page

Mobile converts far below desktop

The answers sit too low on a phone

Check each product page on your phone, starting with your best sellers

Use Microsoft Clarity’s free click maps and recordings for the middle rows, and Shopify Analytics for the rest.

Check your Conversion Rate factors with the free Styling Score

Bots walk your store like a shopper. She likes the midi dress but wants something more modest for a family gathering: longer, with a higher neckline and sleeves. The page can’t change, so she goes back to the grid and often gives up. Or she likes the colour but isn’t sure it works with her skin. The difference between a support chatbot and an AI stylist is the difference between answering where an order is and answering what to buy.

Should I offer a discount to raise conversion?

Only when price is the real doubt: a discount lowers the cost of the order, but it doesn’t tell her whether the piece fits or suits her.

A price drop can push a shopper over the line when everything else is settled. When she is unsure about fit, colour or occasion, 20% off leaves the same doubt at a lower price. A product page with 1,000 views a month and a 0.5% add-to-cart rate gets 5 carts; at 1.5% the same traffic gets 15, with no extra ad spend. When shoppers are unsure about fit or style, a discount leaves the same doubt at a lower price and costs margin on orders that would have happened anyway. Answer the doubt first, then test a discount.

Does virtual try-on increase conversion on a fashion store?

It helps when the doubt is how a whole outfit looks put together. In a personal AI stylist, try-on shows the outfit on a model matched to what the shopper described, so she can judge the look before she buys. No independent benchmark yet shows how much it lifts conversion, so measure it on your own store.

Do I need an app to raise conversion rate?

Not for most fixes.
