Product page on a phone with the title "Linen Wrap Midi Dress – Luna" highlighted, showing a title that says what the item is

At a glance

Name each Shopify product for what it is: the product type first, then one or two details shoppers search for, such as fabric or fit. Have Sidekick or Claude propose titles for your 20 newest products, approve them in a table, then repeat weekly with Shopify Flow. AI assistants and Google can then match your clothes to real searches.

Time: about 2 hours

Cost: free

Developer: not needed

A shopper asks an AI assistant for “a linen midi wrap dress under $150.” If your dress is listed as “The Luna”, the assistant has no dress, no linen and no wrap to match.

A clear product name states the product type first, then one or two details shoppers search for, such as fabric or fit. This guide is about being found by AI, which grows AI Traffic: visits from AI assistants and search. More visits mean more shoppers arriving ready to buy.

This guide is about the product title. To write the description that sits under it, read How to Write Shopify Descriptions That Get Your Clothes Recommended by AI.

A salesperson

gives each piece a collection name and expects shoppers to guess.

A stylist

names the piece for what it is, so shoppers know it at once.

Why do clear product names bring more AI traffic?

Clear product names bring more AI traffic because assistants and Google match a shopper’s words to the words in your title.

Shopify lists the product title first among the details AI platforms consider, ahead of the description, images, type, vendor, collections and tags. It also advises clear, concise product titles (Shopify Help Center, 2026; Shopify Help Center, 2026). No title guarantees a recommendation.

83%

Across 43,000 ChatGPT product carousel items, over 83% matched a product in Google’s top 40 shopping results, compared by title.

70

Google says shoppers usually notice only the first 70 or fewer characters of a product title, depending on screen size.

The study is a snapshot, so treat it as a direction, not a promise.

What does a good fashion product name look like?

A good fashion product name puts the key details and the product type first, adds your own name last and stays within 70 characters.

Use one pattern across the catalogue, so every title reads the same way: key details, product type, colour if the product has only one, then a dash and your own name. Google’s guidance for clothing titles follows the same logic: brand, product type, then other important attributes such as colour, size and material (Google Merchant Center Help, 2026).

  • Use the word a shopper types, such as dress, blazer or wide-leg trousers. Do not use a collection name or a style code.
  • Add fabric, fit or length only when it defines the piece, such as linen, wrap or midi.
  • Add colour only when each colour is its own product. When colours are variants of one product, leave colour to the variant option.
  • Keep prices, sizes, promotional words and all capitals out of the title (Google Merchant Center Help, 2026).
  • Stay within 70 characters. Shopify warns that search listing text beyond 70 characters might be cut off (Shopify Help Center, 2026).

Not worth it if

Stores with under 20 products, or titles that already name the product type, can fix the few odd ones by hand. They can skip the agent and the Flow.

How do I check my store in two minutes?

Open five best sellers on your phone and check whether each title says what the item is without the photo.

  1. Open five best sellers. On your phone, open five best-selling product pages on your live store.
  2. Cover the photo. Read only the title. Could a stranger say what the item is, and what it is made of or how it fits?
  3. Ask an AI assistant. Type “[a product type you sell] in [a fabric] for [an occasion]” and note whether your brand appears. Treat that as a signal, not a score.

How do I rename products with an AI agent?

An AI agent can propose new titles for 20 products in minutes, and you approve every title before it is written.

Use Shopify Sidekick inside your admin, the Shopify connector for Claude, or the Shopify plugin for ChatGPT. All three follow the same five steps (Shopify Help Center, 2026).

Back up before you change anything

Export a CSV first: Products › Export, then choose all products. Run the first batch on 3 products.

  1. ReadThe 20 newest products in one collection
  2. ProposeA table of new titles, nothing written
  3. ApproveYou edit the table and reply apply
  4. WriteOnly the approved rows
  5. VerifyOpen five products on a phone

Copy the prompt that matches your tool.

Sidekick prompt
Products: [the 20 newest products in the collection Dresses]

For each product, propose a new title of 35 to 70 characters.
Build it in this order: key details (fabric, fit or length), then the product type, then the colour only if the product is sold in one colour.
If the current title is only a name, add it at the end after " – ".
Choose the product type from this list only: dress, skirt, top, shirt, blouse, trousers, jeans, jacket, blazer, coat, knitwear, jumpsuit, set, shorts, bag, shoes, accessory.
Use only facts already on the product: title, description, fabric, fit, colour. Do not invent details.
Never use all capitals, symbols, prices, sizes or words like new, sale or best seller.
Match the style of my own titles. Two examples:
- "[YOUR EXAMPLE 1]"
- "[YOUR EXAMPLE 2]"

Change only the title. Never change the URL handle, prices, inventory or discounts.
When I reply "apply", set each approved title and remove the tag needs-clear-title from those products if they have it.

Show me a table first: product, current title, proposed title, one-line reason.
Do not change anything until I reply "apply".

Export a CSV backup first. Edit the product type list to match what you sell. The prompt changes nothing until you reply apply.

Claude or ChatGPT prompt
Using the Shopify connector, read [the 20 newest products in the collection Dresses] in my Shopify store.

For each product, propose a new title of 35 to 70 characters.
Build it in this order: key details (fabric, fit or length), then the product type, then the colour only if the product is sold in one colour.
If the current title is only a name, add it at the end after " – ".

When I reply "apply", update the approved products one at a time. Set each approved title and remove the tag needs-clear-title from the product if it has it. Tell me which products are done.

Show me a table first: product, current title, proposed title, one-line reason.
Do not change anything until I reply "apply".

Mention Shopify by name so the assistant uses the connector. Export a CSV backup first.

  1. Run it on 3 products first. Open Sidekick from any page in your Shopify admin, paste the prompt and read the table.
  2. Edit the table, then reply apply. Change any title you would not say yourself. Sidekick presents changes for review before applying them, but read every row (Shopify Help Center, 2026).
  3. Check five products on your phone. Open each title on the live store. Then check Search engine listing on one product: if you customized its page title, edit it to match.

A connected AI tool updates products one at a time, so keep batches to 20 (Shopify Help Center, 2026). Data you share with Claude or ChatGPT is handled under that provider’s terms.

How do I rename products by hand, if I prefer?

By hand, a new title takes about 2 minutes per product: edit the title, save and check the page on your phone.

  1. Open the product. In your Shopify admin, go to Products and click the product’s name.
  2. Edit the title. Type the new title in the Title field, using the pattern above.
  3. Save and preview. Click Save, then Preview, and read the title on your phone.

To rename many products at once, select them on the Products page, click Bulk edit, type each new title in the table and click Save (Shopify Help Center, 2026). For hundreds of products, export your CSV, edit the Title column and import it back without sorting it, because sorting can disconnect variants and image URLs (Shopify Help Center, 2026).

Leave the URL handle alone: Shopify warns that editing it too often can stop a product showing in search results (Shopify Help Center, 2026).

How do I keep product names clear as new products arrive?

Shopify Flow can tag every new product, and a weekly run turns each tag into a clear title.

Shopify Flow is a free app on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans (Shopify Help Center, 2026).

  1. Tag new products. Open Apps › Flow and start a new workflow. Choose the trigger Product created and the action Add product tags, enter needs-clear-title, then turn the workflow on. Tags are case sensitive (Shopify Help Center, 2026).
  2. Or ask Sidekick to build it. On a desktop, open Sidekick in Flow and paste the prompt below. Sidekick-generated workflows are inactive by default, so turn yours on and test it with a new product.
Sidekick prompt for Flow
Create a workflow that starts when a product is created and adds the product tag needs-clear-title.

Sidekick builds the workflow for you to review. It stays inactive until you turn it on.

  1. Run it weekly. Save the title prompt from the agent section as a skill: Sidekick › plus icon › Skills › New Skill. Once a week, run it and change the product line to “Products: up to 20 products tagged needs-clear-title” (Shopify Help Center, 2026).

Which apps can help?

What happens after AI sends the shopper?

After a clear title earns the click, the shopper lands on a product page that must tell her when to wear the piece and keep her exploring.

Name the occasion in the description with How to Write Shopify Descriptions That Get Your Clothes Recommended by AI. Keep her browsing with How to Add Shop by Occasion to Shopify, part of Engagement. Remove the last doubt with How to Describe Fabric and Feel So Shoppers Stop Hesitating, part of Conversion Rate.

How long does it take and what does it cost?

Renaming your first 120 products takes about 2 hours with an AI agent, and Sidekick makes it free.

These times are estimates for a first batch, not measured results.

How do I know it’s fixed?

The fix is working when your best sellers name their product type in the first words and AI-referred orders rise over several weeks.

Run the free Styling Score again once your best sellers carry clear titles, and check the AIT-02 card.

Then watch AI-referred orders. Shopify says orders from AI channels flow into your admin with referral attribution (Shopify, 2026). Compare the 30 days before and after.

Allow two weeks or more: Shopify says title edits can take a couple of weeks to show in search results (Shopify Help Center, 2026).

Where does this fit in AI Traffic?

AI Traffic has five factors, and this guide covers the second.

What else do founders ask about product names?

Founders most often ask these five questions.

How long should a Shopify product title be?

Aim for 40 to 70 characters, with the product type in the first words. Shopify warns that search listing text beyond 70 characters might be cut off, and Google says shoppers usually notice only the first 70 or fewer. Longer titles are allowed, but the extra words rarely help.

Should I keep my creative product names?

Yes, as the last words of the title. Put what the item is first, then your name, as in “Linen Wrap Midi Dress – Luna”. Shoppers who know the name can still find it, and everyone else can tell what the item is.

Should I put my brand name in the product title?

Usually not, if you sell only your own label. The Vendor field already holds your brand, so use the characters for fabric and fit. Google’s product data guidance suggests adding a brand name when you sell many brands and the brand sets products apart. For one label, the title can stay shorter.

Will renaming products hurt my Google rankings?

Nobody can promise a ranking either way. Shopify creates the URL handle when you create a product and lets you edit it separately, so a rename on its own does not touch it. Rename in batches, leave the handle alone and judge the trend over several weeks. Shopify says title edits can take a couple of weeks to show.

Do I need an app to rename products?

No. Sidekick, the product page, the bulk editor and Shopify Flow are built into your admin or free, and they cover the whole job. Flow needs a Basic plan or higher. Add a spreadsheet app such as Matrixify only if you want to rename hundreds of products from one file.
