Shopify product page on a phone with a highlighted fit note reading "Runs small. Size up." under the size selector
A fit note under the size selector tells the shopper how this piece really fits.

At a glance

A fit note is one short line saying how a piece fits: runs small, true to size or runs large. Draft notes with Sidekick or Claude from your own fit facts, approve them in a table, save them in a Shopify metafield and show them beside the size selector. Shoppers pick the right size, so fewer orders return.

A shopper finds a linen dress she loves, checks the size chart and sees her size. She still cannot tell whether it runs small, so she orders two sizes and sends one back.

A fit note is a one- or two-sentence line on a product page that says how this piece fits in practice, beyond its measurements. Return is the stage this guide fixes: it tracks the share of orders sent back, and size or fit is the most common reason. Fewer wrong-size orders mean more of the sales you have already won are kept.

This guide is about the written fit note. For the measurement chart, read How to Add a Size Guide for Each Piece on Shopify to Cut Returns.

Why do fit notes cut returns?

Fit notes cut returns because they tell a shopper how this garment fits, which measurements in a size chart cannot do alone.

Two pieces with the same chest measurement can fit differently: one in stretch jersey, one in stiff linen. A fit note turns that difference into a plain sentence. Coresight Research estimates the average US online apparel return rate reached 23.4% in 2025 (Coresight Research, 2026).

70%

In a February to March 2026 survey of 212 US shoppers who had returned online apparel, about 70% gave size or fit as the reason.

Around 40% of US shoppers say they have abandoned an online apparel purchase, frequently or sometimes, because product page information was missing or confusing.

The same report tells brands to add comparative statements, such as runs small or true to size, to the product page. Baymard Institute’s testing saw a shopper welcome a plain note that one style runs half a size small (Baymard Institute, 2022). A fit note is that sentence, written once per product.

What does a good fit note look like?

A good fit note gives a verdict, a reason and a between-sizes tip in 30 words or fewer, based on facts you know about the garment.

This illustrative before and after uses an imagined store, not a real one:

VersionWhat a shopper finds
BeforeA size chart with chest and waist measurements, but nothing about stretch, cut or how this dress compares with her usual size.
AfterA line beside the size selector: “Runs small. The linen has no stretch, so the bust sits snug. Between sizes, size up.”

Every note has three parts. The verdict is one of runs small, true to size or runs large. The reason names the cut or the stretch. The tip says which way to go when a shopper is between two sizes.

Not worth it if

A store that sells one cut in one stretch fabric, such as a single line of knit tees, can use one note for the whole catalogue. Most multi-category fashion stores cannot.

How do I check my store in two minutes?

Open three best sellers on your phone and check whether each one says in words how it fits.

  1. Open three best sellers. On your phone, open a dress, a top and an outer layer, or your three biggest categories.
  2. Look beside the size selector. Find a line that says runs small, true to size or runs large, not just a link to a chart.
  3. Read it like a shopper. If the line only repeats measurements, it is not a fit note yet.

How do I write fit notes with an AI agent?

An AI agent can draft fit notes for 20 products at a time, but it can only use the fit facts you give it.

An agent cannot see how a garment fits. It reads the title, description, fabric and size chart, plus whatever you add. Give it your facts, let it write the sentence, and approve every row.

What counts as a fit fact?

  • Return reasons such as “too small”, if your returns app records them.
  • Notes from trying the piece on.
  • Fabric and stretch from the garment tag.
  • Customer messages about fit, with names and emails removed.

Back up and duplicate your theme first

Export a CSV first: Products › Export, then choose all products. Before you change the product page, work on a duplicate of your theme.

  1. Create the Fit note field. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings › Metafields and metaobjects › Products, click Add definition, name it Fit note, choose the Multi-line text type and save.
  2. Show it beside the size selector. In Online Store › Themes › Edit theme, choose the Products template, add a Text block under the size selector and connect it to the Fit note field with the dynamic source icon. Your theme must support dynamic sources.
  3. Test an empty field. Open a product with no note on your phone and check that no empty box shows.
  1. ReadThe 20 newest products in one collection
  2. ProposeA table of fit notes, nothing written
  3. ApproveYou fix every row and reply apply
  4. WriteOnly the approved rows

For each product, write a fit note of 30 words or fewer. Use only facts from its title, description, fabric, size chart and measurements, plus these fit facts I know:
[Paste what you know, for example: Linen wrap dress, no stretch, runs about half a size small in the bust. Returns say too tight across the shoulders.]

Start each note with one verdict from this list only:
Runs small. / True to size. / Runs large.
Then add one line on the cut or stretch.
End with one of these only:
Between sizes, size up. / Between sizes, size down. / Between sizes, take your usual size.

Two notes in my voice:
"Runs small. The linen has no stretch, so the bust sits snug. Between sizes, size up."
"True to size. Cut close through the waist, easy through the skirt. Between sizes, take your usual size."

If you do not have enough facts to be sure how a piece fits, write "Ask me" instead of guessing.

Show me a table first: product, fit note, the facts you used.
When I reply "apply", save each approved note in the Fit note product metafield. If you cannot set that metafield, give me the approved notes as a two-column table I can paste into the bulk editor.
Do not change anything until I reply "apply".

In Claude or ChatGPT, begin with “Using the Shopify connector, read” and add “Do not read or repeat customer names or emails.” Export a CSV backup first.

  1. Run it on 5 products first. Open Sidekick from any page in your Shopify admin, paste the prompt and read the table.
  2. Fix the table, then reply apply. Replace every “Ask me” with the real fact, and delete any claim you cannot stand behind.
  3. Open five products on your phone. Check each note reads naturally beside the size selector, then run the next batch of 20.

Start with your most-returned pieces

If your returns app records reasons, sort by size or fit and write notes for those 20 pieces first. They carry the most avoidable returns.

How do I write fit notes by hand, if I prefer?

By hand, a fit note takes about 3 minutes per product once you know how the piece fits.

  1. Collect what you know. Try the piece on, check its tag for stretch, and note any “too small” or “too large” in your returns.
  2. Write the note. Use the three parts: verdict, reason and between-sizes tip, in 30 words or fewer.
  3. Add it to the product. Open the product, scroll to Product metafields, click Fit note, type the line and click Save.
  4. Or fill many at once. On the Products page, select products and click Edit products, then Columns. Tick Fit note in the Metafields section, type down the column and click Save.
  5. Check on your phone. Confirm the note shows beside the size selector.

How do I keep fit notes current as new products arrive?

Shopify Flow can tag every new product that needs a fit note, and a weekly run writes it.

Shopify Flow is a free app on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. New products have no fit facts until someone tries them on, so add those facts to the prompt each week.

  1. Tag new products. Open Apps › Flow, start a new workflow, choose the trigger Product added to store and the action Add product tags, enter needs-fit-note, then turn the workflow on.
  2. Or ask Sidekick to build it. Paste the prompt below into Sidekick inside Flow, review the workflow it opens, then turn it on yourself.
Sidekick prompt for Flow
Create a workflow that starts when a product is added to the store and adds the product tag needs-fit-note.

Sidekick builds the workflow for you to review. It stays inactive until you turn it on.

Run it weekly: save the fit-note prompt above as a Sidekick skill, swap its product line for “Products: up to 20 products tagged needs-fit-note”, add the new fit facts and run it once a week. Approve the table, then ask Sidekick to remove the tag from each product it finishes.

The personal layer

Every shopper reads the same fit note.

A fit note tells every shopper the same thing about a garment, however carefully you write it. It cannot tell one shopper, who is between sizes and likes a loose fit, whether to size up on this particular dress. A personal AI stylist can, because it answers one shopper at a time from your own catalogue and the fit notes you have already written.

iWAND is an AI stylist for independent fashion brands on Shopify. It gives every shopper a personal stylist, with outfits, styling advice, try-on and size help built on the brand’s own catalogue.

How do I know it’s fixed?

The fix is working when every product shows a fit note and the share of returns citing size or fit starts to fall within weeks.

Then watch size and fit returns on the products you updated, using your returns app if it records reasons. Compare the 4 to 6 weeks before and after on the same products. If a piece still collects “too small” returns, change its verdict.

What else do founders ask about fit notes?

Founders most often ask these five questions.

What is a fit note on a Shopify product page?

A fit note is one or two sentences on a product page that say how the piece fits in practice, such as runs small, true to size or runs large. It sits beside the size selector and adds what a size chart cannot: the effect of the cut and the fabric’s stretch. Each note should end with advice for shoppers between sizes.

Do fit notes replace a size chart?

No. A size chart gives measurements; a fit note says how the garment fits in practice. Use both: the chart for numbers and the note for the verdict. Add the note under the size selector, next to the size chart link.

Where should the fit note go on a Shopify product page?

Put the fit note directly under the size selector, where shoppers choose their size. Baymard Institute found that shoppers overlook size help placed far from the selectors, and the same logic applies to a fit note. In the theme editor, drag the Text block connected to your Fit note field just below the size options.

Can AI write fit notes without making up how a piece fits?

Yes, if you give it the facts and tell it to say “Ask me” when it does not know. An AI agent cannot see how a garment fits; it can only turn your returns data, fabric details and team notes into a clear sentence. Approve a table of proposed notes before anything is saved.

Can AI give each shopper personal fit advice?

A fit note says the same thing to everyone. A personal AI stylist can go further by answering one shopper at a time from your catalogue and your fit notes. iWAND is our product. Free to install; iWAND charges 5% only on the sales it makes.
