At a glance

A style edit is a small curated Shopify collection with a stylist’s point of view, such as The Wedding Guest Edit. Pick six edits, have Sidekick propose the pieces, approve them in a table, then add each edit to your menu and homepage. Shoppers then browse by outfit idea, which grows Engagement.

Time: about 2 hours

Cost: free

Developer: not needed

A shopper scrolls a collection of 200 dresses and cannot tell where to start. Without someone’s picks to follow, she usually leaves.

A style edit is a small curated collection of 8 to 15 pieces that a stylist picked around one idea, with a short note on why they belong together. Style edits grow Engagement, the stage that counts product views, pages per session and time on site.

This guide is about hand-picked edits. To style full outfits, read the shoppable lookbook guide. To sort your whole catalogue by occasion with rules, read the shop by occasion guide.

A stylist

Why do style edits grow Engagement?

Style edits grow Engagement because a short, picked list gives shoppers a place to start, so they open several products instead of leaving.

A style edit answers “where do I start?” before the shopper asks. She opens several pieces from one edit instead of scanning the whole grid.

What does a good style edit look like?

A good style edit has a clear name, 8 to 15 pieces, a stylist’s note, a place in your menu and homepage, and only pieces in stock.

  • A name that states an idea: The Wedding Guest Edit, not Dresses.
  • 8 to 15 pieces: mixed across at least two of your categories.
  • A stylist’s note: two sentences on why the pieces belong together.
  • Easy to find: a link in the menu and a section on the homepage.
  • Current: every piece is active and in stock.

How is a style edit different from other collections?

A shop by occasion collection fills itself from tags, and a shoppable look is one outfit of three to five pieces. A style edit sits between them: a hand-picked set built around one idea.

How do I check my store in two minutes?

You can check your style edits in two minutes by opening your store on a phone and looking for one collection named for an idea.

  1. Look for edits in the menu and on the homepageA name such as The Linen Edit counts. A name such as Dresses does not.
  2. Open one editCount the pieces and read the top of the page. You want 8 to 15 pieces and a short stylist’s note.
  3. Tap five piecesEach one should open its product page and be in stock.

How do I create style edits faster with an AI agent?

An AI agent reads your catalogue, proposes six edits with pieces and a stylist’s note, and creates them only after you approve.

Choosing which pieces belong together is the slow part. The agent follows five steps, so nothing is created until you say so.

Back up first, and use a duplicate theme

Before an agent creates collections, export a CSV backup (Products › Export). Before you change the menu or homepage layout, duplicate your theme (Online Store › Themes) and edit the copy.

  1. ReadThe 60 newest products across your categories
  2. ProposeA table of six edits, nothing created
  3. ApproveYou edit the table and say apply
  4. WriteOne collection per approved edit
  5. VerifyOpen each edit on a phone

Use Sidekick in your Shopify admin, or connect your store to Claude and approve access first, then start with “Use my Shopify store.” A connected tool changes items one at a time, so a large batch can stop partway. Six edits is small enough. Menus and the homepage stay by hand.

Sidekick or Claude prompt
Look at the 60 newest products across my categories [Dresses, Tops, Outerwear].
Propose 6 style edits of 8 to 15 pieces each. Use these edit names only:
The Wedding Guest Edit, The Workwear Edit, The Weekend Edit,
The Linen Edit, The New Season Edit, The Date Night Edit.
Each edit must mix pieces from at least two categories.
Use only products that are active and in stock.
Write a two-sentence stylist's note for each edit in my brand voice. Examples of my voice:
"[Example sentence 1]"
"[Example sentence 2]"
Show me a table: edit name, the pieces, one-line reason, stylist's note.
Do not create anything until I reply "apply".
When I reply "apply", create one collection per approved edit, with only the pieces I approved, the note as its description, sorted manually.
Do not change prices, inventory or discounts. Do not delete anything.

Show me a table first. The prompt creates nothing until you reply apply.

Name edits for an idea, not a product type

The Linen Edit invites browsing, while Dresses repeats your menu. Swap the six example names in the prompt for ideas that fit your brand.

How do I create style edits by hand, if I prefer?

You create a style edit by hand with one collection of 8 to 15 chosen products, a clear name and a two-sentence stylist’s note, in about three hours for six edits.

A style edit is a normal Shopify collection with products you add yourself, so you need no app and no code.

How do I create the edit?

  1. Choose six ideasFor example an occasion, a fabric, a colour story, a season or a price point. Each idea needs 8 to 15 pieces you already sell.
  2. Create the collectionGo to Products › Collections and click Add collection. Add a title such as “The Wedding Guest Edit”, and add your two-sentence stylist’s note as the description.
  3. Add a featured imageClick the upload icon and choose your best on-model photo from the edit, then click Done.
  4. Add the pieces by handIn the Products source, click Add products, select your 8 to 15 pieces and click Add. Add no conditions, so the edit stays as you styled it.
  5. Set the orderUnder Collection items, open Default sort, choose Manually, and drag your hero piece to the top. Then click Save.
  6. Check availabilityKeep the Online Store sales channel on, or the edit cannot be linked from your menu.
  7. Repeat for the other five editsOpen a finished collection and click Duplicate, then swap the pieces, the note and the image. The copy adds “(Copy)” to its title and is on no sales channel until you turn one on.

How do I add the edits to my menu and homepage?

  1. Add a “Style edits” menu itemGo to Content › Menus, open your main menu, click Add menu item and name it “Style edits”.
  2. Link each edit under itClick Add menu item, click the Link field, choose Collections, select the edit, and drag it below “Style edits”. Click Save.
  3. Add the homepage sectionOpen Online Store › Themes › Customize on your duplicate theme, add a Collection list section and choose the six edits. Section names depend on your theme.
  4. Publish and test on a phonePublish the theme copy, then tap through one edit on your phone.

How do I keep my style edits up to date?

You keep style edits up to date with a Shopify Flow that tags every new product, and a weekly agent run that places tagged products in the right edit.

Hand-picked edits do not fill themselves, so new arrivals never appear in them unless someone adds them. The Flow and the weekly run take about ten minutes.

  1. Ask Sidekick to build the FlowInstall the free Shopify Flow app, go to Apps › Flow, click the Sidekick icon and type: “When a product is created, add the tag needs-edit-review.” Review the workflow, then click Turn on workflow. To build it yourself, use the Product created trigger and the Add product tags action.
  2. Save the weekly run as a Sidekick skillOpen Sidekick, click the plus icon, choose Skills then New Skill, and paste the prompt below. Run it each week by typing / and its name.
  3. Review the tables, then reply applyEdit any row you disagree with. Sidekick adds the products you approved to their edits and removes the tag.
Sidekick prompt (weekly skill)
Look at every product tagged needs-edit-review.
For each one, suggest which of my edits it belongs in, or "none":
[The Wedding Guest Edit, The Workwear Edit, The Weekend Edit, The Linen Edit, The New Season Edit, The Date Night Edit].
Also list any product already in those edits that is archived, in draft, or out of stock in any variant.
Show me two tables: product, suggested edit, one-line reason; and edit, problem product, problem.
Do not change anything until I reply "apply".
When I reply "apply", add each approved product to its edit and remove the tag needs-edit-review from every product in the first table.
Do not change prices, inventory or discounts. Do not delete anything.

Show me a table first. The prompt changes nothing until you reply apply.

Which apps can help you create style edits?

Native Shopify collections cover the whole job for free, and a merchandising app adds drag-and-drop sorting, pinning and scheduled updates.

The personal layer

A style edit is the same for every shopper.

A style edit shows every shopper the same picks. It cannot choose the pieces that suit one shopper’s size, taste or the event she is dressing for. A personal AI stylist can, because it answers one shopper at a time from your own catalogue.

iWAND is an AI stylist for independent fashion brands on Shopify. It gives every shopper a personal stylist, with outfits, styling advice, try-on and size help built on the brand’s own catalogue.

iWAND is our product. Free to install; iWAND charges 5% only on the sales it makes.

How long does it take and what does it cost?

Creating six style edits takes about two hours with an AI agent and about three hours by hand, and none of the options needs a developer.

Not worth it if

Your store sells one piece type, such as knitwear only, or fewer than about 30 products. One collection of best sellers is enough, and extra edits add little.

How do I know my style edits are fixed?

Your style edits are fixed when the Styling Score shows ENG-04 as Done, and shoppers reach an edit in one tap from your menu or homepage.

Run the Styling Score again after you publish the menu and homepage section. In Shopify analytics, watch pages per session and visits to your edit collections for 30 days before and after launch.

What else do founders ask about style edits?

How many style edits should I create?

Start with six, each with 8 to 15 pieces picked around one idea. Mix at least two categories so shoppers browse more than one rack. Add a seasonal edit before each new season, and retire edits that no longer fit by turning off their Online Store availability instead of deleting them.

What is the difference between a style edit and a regular collection?

A regular collection groups products by a rule, such as every dress. A style edit groups a small set a stylist picked around one idea and adds a note on why the pieces belong together. Edits are hand-picked, so they stay a stylist’s choice, while rule-based collections fill themselves.

Should I use automated collections instead?

Use collections with conditions, also called automated collections, when a rule describes the group, such as every dress tagged occasion-workwear. Use a style edit when you want your own taste to choose the pieces. You can run both: rules for the catalogue and edits for the front of the store.

Do I need an app to create style edits?

No. Collections, menus and the theme editor are built into Shopify and cover the whole job. A merchandising app only adds drag-and-drop sorting, pinning and scheduled updates. The optional weekly refresh uses Sidekick and the free Shopify Flow app, which is available on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans.

How long until shoppers browse more?

Nobody can promise a date or a lift. Compare pages per session and visits to your edit collections for 30 days before and after launch, and judge the trend over several weeks. Smaller stores may need longer before a clear pattern shows.

Can AI choose the pieces for each shopper?

Yes, with a personal AI stylist. A style edit shows every shopper the same picks, while a personal AI stylist chooses pieces for one shopper from your own catalogue. iWAND is one; iWAND is our product. Free to install; iWAND charges 5% only on the sales it makes.
