A typical Shopify fashion store converts about 1.0% of visits, and the best 20% convert 1.9% or more. The median order is $113 (Littledata, 2026). About 23.4% of US online apparel comes back (Coresight Research, 2026), and apparel retailers keep about 31.7% of customers (Bluecore, 2025). Compare your store stage by stage.

Shopify fashion sample: 76 stores

Updated: Oct 28, 2026

Change log Oct 28, 2026: rebuilt as a benchmarks page for all six stages; every figure re-checked against its source; figures without an independent source removed.

Your Shopify dashboard says 1.2% of last month’s visits bought something. Is that good? Without a number to compare it with, you can’t tell whether to fix the product page, the checkout, or nothing at all.

A benchmark is an independent figure for the same metric, measured across many stores, that shows what normal and strong look like. This page collects them for the six stages of a Shopify fashion store, from AI Traffic to Repeat Purchase, with the source, sample and year next to every number.

We use only figures from independent research with a stated sample and date. Where data for Shopify fashion stores exists we use it first, and we say when a figure covers all retail or one country. Each stage links to its hub, where you’ll find the fixes.

What are the benchmarks for a Shopify fashion store?

A typical Shopify fashion store converts about 1.0% of visits at a $113 median order, gets about 23.4% of its apparel sales back, and keeps about one customer in three; the table gives one figure for each stage.

Typical is the median or average. Strong is Littledata’s best-20% threshold, where one is published. Littledata’s sample is 76 fashion and clothing stores on Shopify, July 27 to October 24, 2026. Each stage’s sources are in its section below.

Read the table as a first check, not a verdict. A store far below a typical figure has found the stage that costs it most; a store above it can still close the gap to the strong figure.

How much traffic do fashion stores get from AI assistants?

No independent benchmark yet gives the share of a fashion store’s visits that come from AI assistants, but the visits that do arrive convert and engage better than other traffic, and they are growing fast.

What is a good average order value for a fashion store?

The median order on a Shopify fashion store is $113, and the best 20% of stores average $298 or more (Littledata, 2026).

What return rate is normal for a fashion store?

About 23.4% of clothing bought online in the US came back in 2025, against 19.3% of all US online sales, and nearly 70% of shoppers who returned clothing gave size and fit as the reason.

What is a good repeat purchase rate for a fashion store?

Apparel retailers keep about 31.7% of their customers, more than the 27.4% across seven retail sectors, while nearly three-quarters of a retailer’s customers buy only once (Bluecore, 2025).

How do I compare my store with these benchmarks?

Pull one number for each stage from Shopify for the same 90 days, compare each with the typical figure and then the strong one, and start with the stage where your gap is largest.

  1. Pick the periodUse your last full 90 days, the same window as Littledata. For returns, use a period whose return window has closed.
  2. Pull six numbersIn Shopify, open Analytics › Reports: sessions from AI assistants, bounce rate, conversion rate, average order value, returned quantity rate, and the share of customers who ordered again in the customer cohort analysis.
  3. Compare with the typical figureA stage well below it is costing you more than it costs a typical store. Mark it.
  4. Compare with the strong figureThe gap to the best 20% is the size of the prize at each stage.
  5. Fix one stage at a timeOpen that stage’s hub, add one fix, and measure the same number again after the same length of time.

Compare like with like

A store with a $300 average order will usually convert less often than one at $40, and that is healthy. Compare with stores at your price point, and always with your own last period.

What are the benchmarks worth in revenue?

On 10,000 sessions a month at a $113 order, moving from the median fashion conversion rate to the best-20% rate is worth about $10,170 a month before returns, from the same traffic.

A worked example, with every assumption stated, using the Shopify fashion figures above:

  1. 10,000 sessions at the median conversion rate of 1.0% give 100 orders. At $113 each, that is $11,300.
  2. The same sessions at the best-20% rate of 1.9% give 190 orders, or $21,470: $10,170 more.
  3. If 23.4% of what is sold comes back, about $8,656 stays sold at the median rate and about $16,446 at the best-20% rate.
  4. Each session is worth about $1.13 at the median rate and about $2.15 at the best-20% rate.

This is arithmetic, not a measured result, and it applies the return rate to sales value for simplicity. Littledata’s measured revenue per session on Shopify fashion stores is $1.72 at the median and $3.32 for the best 20%. It is higher than the sum because each median comes from a different store, so the medians don’t multiply exactly.

Why do benchmarks for the same metric disagree?

Benchmarks for the same metric differ because studies use different stores, countries, definitions and dates, so compare your number only with a figure measured the same way.

ReasonExample from this page
Who is in the sampleCart abandonment is 81% at the median Shopify fashion store (Littledata) but 70.22% across 50 studies of all ecommerce (Baymard).
CountryUK fashion stores converted 1.62% in September 2026 (IRP Commerce); the median Shopify fashion store converts 1.0% (Littledata).
DefinitionLittledata counts a bounce as a session under 10 seconds with one page and no conversion; Contentsquare counts visitors who leave after one page.
Retention or repeat rateBluecore’s retention rate is not the same number as Shopify’s returning customer rate; the Repeat Purchase hub explains the difference.
Units or valueA return rate counted in units can differ from one counted in sales value, especially when expensive pieces come back more often.
Median or meanLittledata’s all-Shopify conversion rate is 1.4% at the median and 1.9% as a mean, because a few high converters pull the mean up.
DateUK fashion conversion moved from 1.29% to 1.62% in a year (IRP Commerce), so an old benchmark can mislead.

Don’t mix sources in one comparison

Compare your conversion rate with one source, measured over the same length of time, and keep using that source next time. Switching sources can make a store look better or worse when nothing changed.

Where do the benchmarks fit in the six stages?

Each benchmark measures one of the six stages a Shopify fashion store moves a shopper through, from the first visit to the next order; the strip links to each stage’s fixes.

What else do founders ask about benchmarks?

Founders most often ask these six questions.

What is a good conversion rate for a clothing store on Shopify?

The median Shopify fashion store converts 1.0% of sessions, and the best 20% convert 1.9% or more (Littledata, 76 stores, July to October 2026). Across all Shopify stores the median is 1.4%. Compare with stores at a similar price point, and with your own rate over time.

What is a normal average order value for a fashion store?

The median average order value of Shopify fashion stores is $113, and the best 20% are at $298 or more (Littledata, 2026). UK fashion stores averaged £88.28 in September 2026 (IRP Commerce). Price point explains most of the difference between stores.

What return rate is normal for online clothing?

Coresight Research estimates that US online apparel had a 23.4% return rate in 2025, against 19.3% for all US online sales (NRF and Happy Returns, 2025). A 2025 survey of UK shoppers put the share of fashion items returned at about 30%.

What is the average cart abandonment rate for fashion stores?

Littledata puts the median cart abandonment rate of Shopify fashion stores at 81%, with the best 20% at 73% or lower (2026). Baymard Institute’s average across 50 studies of all ecommerce is 70.22%. They measure different stores, so compare with the one closest to yours.

Does traffic from AI assistants convert better?

On US retail sites, yes: Adobe found that visits from AI assistants converted 60% better than other visits in July 2026, with 53% more revenue per visit and a 33% lower bounce rate. No independent benchmark yet gives the share of a fashion store’s traffic that comes from AI assistants, so track your own in Shopify.

How often are these benchmarks updated?

We re-check every figure against its source when we update the page, and record each change in the change log at the top. The date next to each source shows when it was last checked.
